Course Description

CanPHI is pleased to offer Canadian and US building professionals the world’s first ever hands-on Builder’s training course for Passive House residential construction using all-natural materials (above grade). This approach will demonstrate exciting new possibilities and set new standards for environmentally sustainable and cost-effective construction, by combining two building revolutions the proven Passive House Standard,
together with prefabrication using cross-laminated timber (CLT). CLT is new to Canada, but is now making waves around the world due to its many distinct advantages over traditional timber frame building, including high-speed construction, extraordinary precision and extreme levels of airtightness. We think it represents the future.

Course topics include:

  • The five fundamental elements of Passive House design
  • Structural design and planning in CLT
  • Simple, natural insulation systems for Passive House performance
  • Achieving extreme airtightness in CLT buildings
  • Thermal bridge-free construction detailing and hands-on examples
  • Window design and installation for Passive House performance
  • Mechanical fastening systems for CLT buildings
  • Built examples: CanPHI case study CLT buildings lessons learned

By the end of this course participants should have the confidence and knowledge to construct a 1- or 2-storey Passive House-quality building envelope using prefabricated CLT elements.
