Certified Passive House Designer CourseĀ 

September 29 – October 1 and October 13 – 15, 2017

This 6-day, intensive 2-part course is aimed atĀ Canadian building professionals, contractors, planners and homeowners who are motivated to learn the world’s most advanced building efficiency standard. Our course covers the core science behind the revolutionary Passive House approach, including optimizing building shape, superinsulation, thermal bridge-free construction, ultra high-performance windows and ventilation systems. The course also includes practical exercises and examples using the PHPP design software. We now include important building science analysis and introduce online tools for cold climate construction analysis, covering appropriate design for moisture safety in super insulated building assemblies.

We introduce design challenges and details from many Canadian Passive House projects, showing a range of suitable solutions for our climate and building culture, and we include a tour of several local Passive House projects (see below).Ā See ourĀ Course Learning GoalsĀ for more details.Ā Total fees for this course are $1550 + GST. This course is the basis for those seeking qualification as an internationally-recognized Certified Passive House Designer. Candidates will have the option of writing theĀ Ā December 1, 2017Ā international exam (offered in Calgary, separate fee required).

Meet Your Instructors

Malcolm Issac

Malcolm Isaacs

MalcolmĀ IsaacsĀ is a Civil Engineering graduate of the University of Ottawa, and a Passive House pioneer in Canada. In 2005 he designed and built the first house in the country to Passive House specifications, located in Wakefield, QC, in which he lives. Malcolm co-founded CanPHI in 2010 and has worked extensively at the Passivhaus Institut in Germany. Heā€™s the most experienced and accomplished Passive House educator in Canada, having taught the CPHD course in locations across Canada since 2010, and he’s run the international CPHD exam on behalf of PHI since 2013. He is a PHI-Accredited Certifier of Passive House buildings, and his focus for this course is on affordable design solutions and Passive House economics.

Tomaz Stich

Tomaz Stich grew up in Germany and worked a full apprenticeship in cabinet making before taking a 4-year diploma in wood engineering at the prestigious Hildesheim Institute of Applied Sciences, with graduate research work in wood structures at the Institite for Wood Technology Research in Stockholm, Sweden. Fluent in four languages, Tomaz qualified as a Certified Passive House Designer in 2009, when this qualification first became available, and he’s now working as a structural and Passive House designer and builder in multiple projects across Canada, with a specialty in CLT design. Tomaz is now also a PHI-accredited Certifier of Passive House buildings, and he lives with his family in beautiful Invermere, BC.
